Save the date! Join us on September 23rd as we welcome Ben Schilaty to the Hearth! Ben will share his journey of "Finding My Place in the Kingdom" as a gay member of the Church. In a recent talk at BYU Elder Ballard said, "I want anyone who is a member of the Church who is gay or lesbian to know I believe you have a place in the kingdom and I recognize that sometimes it may be difficult for you to see where you fit in the Lord's Church, but you do." Ben writes a blog about his experiences as a gay Latter-day Saint and while living in Tucson, AZ he also started a support community for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints.
Ben Schilaty is working on a Master's in Social Work at BYU and works as an intern at LDS Family Services. Ben speaks both Spanish and Portuguese from his time living abroad in Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, and Portugal. He returned to BYU last fall and hopes to work with LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and their families. Ben is a lifelong member of the Church and served as a missionary in Chihuahua, Mexico, from 2003-2005. He currently serves in the Elders Quorum presidency of his ward and as a temple worker in the Provo Temple.
