A Better Scriptural Understanding of Gender, Identity, and Sexuality
Join historical linguist Jared Lambert for a fascinating look at how the original languages of the Bible reshape the way we understand gender, identity, and the LGBTQ community in scripture. Using a historical linguistic lens and the ancient context, his presentation will explore problematic passages about unity in Christ, eunuchs, and commonly misunderstood verses about sexuality. Jared’s presentation will discuss how many biblical ideas about masculine and feminine were originally understood through symbolic opposites that create wholeness.
This promises to be a thoughtful and thought provoking conversation on scripture, language, and belonging.
Jared looks at scriptures that have historically been used to condemn members of the LGBTQ community and examines them through a historic linguistic perspective to help us understand that what we see as rigid definitions are much more complex and layered. Jared will examine biblical passages to help us understand their linguistic roots and historical context, and see how they address ritual abuse and sexual exploitation rather than modern, loving relationships.
